FDC/aerofilter Now Approved for Flight in Falling and Blowing Snow

Novato, CA - March 25, 2005 - FDC/aerofilter has obtained FAA approval for unrestricted flight in falling and blowing snow conditions for its engine inlet barrier filter systems for the Eurocopter AS350B, BA, B2, B3, B4 (EC130) B4. In cooperation with Eurocopter, flight tests were conducted in February in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and also in the Sierra Nevada range near Lake Tahoe, California in order to show operational capability in the types of snow required by the FAA and Transport Canada. Prior snow tests on other aircraft, conducted in natural conditions and in the wind tunnel, provided the basis to remove the restriction without the aid of diverters or baffles.
The AS350 IBF kit has flown in falling and blowing snow, but carried the standard aircraft flight manual restriction limiting flight to 10 minutes in visibility of less than 1500 meters. Previously the only option for unrestricted flight in snow was to install the optional factory snow kit, a particle separator panel with no bleed air driven ejectors or a particle separator, neither of which offer the filter efficiency of an inlet barrier filter. "Now AS350 operators can operate year round with total engine protection," says Chris Berns of FDC/aerofilter.
